Yacht Club of Greece

The Yacht Club of Greece was established in 1933 by a group of prominent Athenians under the name of Yacht Club of Athens.

The aims of the Club are: the promotion of sailing in Greece; the training and recreation of its members in yachting activities; and the promotion of nautical tourism.

Its premises lie on the Piraeus Peninsula in the historical military port of Ancient Athens called Mounichia. This picturesque area retains is ancient name even today, but the contemporary colloquial name is “Microlimano” which means “small port”.

The main club house is situated on the top of a hill at the southwest end of the port, which forms a small peninsula with a unique view of the Phaleron Bay, the Saronic Gulf and the islands of Salamis, Aegina and Poros, as well as the city of Athens with its surrounding mountains. The slopes of the hill are beautifully landscaped with gardens.

The Club has 1550 members comprised of Regular Members, Diplomatic Members, Naval Associates and Junior Members. There is also a provision for Corresponding Members.

The Club offers the following facilities to its members:

Vorres Museum

The Vorres Museum and its collections cover 3,000 years of Greek history, laid out in a complex of 6acres of buildings, courtyards, and gardens. The museum is divided into two main sections: the first comprises a group of two traditional village houses and the remains of a stable, dating back to the early 19th Century and featuring peasant artefacts. It is important to bear in mind that this section is not designed to be a careful re-construction of traditional homes but rather a re-adaptation of Greek architecture and popular artefacts and objects used in daily Greek life, to reveal their inherent beauty and practicality.

The second section consists of a museum of contemporary Greek art, with displays of paintings and sculptures by leading Greek artists of the second half of this century. The Vorres collection represents some of the best works of this period. Items have been arranged in groups relating to subject matter and colour composition. Also, for the first time works by leading Greek artists living abroad are on display.

The typically Greek courtyards and gardens of the museum are a special attraction. It took 21 years to complete the Vorres museum and it is justifiably considered to be one of the most beautiful and original of its kind in the world.

This exceptional private home and museum, located just 15 km. From the centre of Athens, can be the ideal setting for a private party or a memorable farewell dinner. A selection of menus is available and musical entertainment can be arranged upon request (at extra cost).
